How to recognise a bear...

There are quite a lot of people walking around with shotguns in case they find a bear. Others carry mace. However, lots of people walk around with so-called bear-bells that supposedly scare the bears off.
We were told that the bells are quite effective against black and brown bears - less so against grizzleys. When trekking through the backcountry you should watch out for bear scat. Scat of black bears can be recognised by the remains of plants, nuts and berries - occasionally small rodents. Brown bears' scat has a lot of fish bones in it. Grizzley scat can be identified by the bells that are in it...

Fact is that the only bear we saw until now was one from the boat...
